Tell Me About Snetterton Seats

As the title suggests - what do you know about Snetterton seats

- Who invented then ? any particular manufacturer ?

- Waffle top / quilted ?

- Obviously the name refers to the race circuit but why ?

I'm asking because I recently got hold ( thanks Jarv ) of a 70's/ 80's Two Four model and intend to recover etc .i had assumed that the back had been bent back though use but after taking off the cover it appears to be how it was sold







Any info would be welcome

I think the seat was first seen at a Snetterton race meeting back in the day, and was suitably dubbed. It's a bit like the way that the Coast to Coast screen got its name.

I have always believed that the back of the seat should be perpendicular to the base. The last one that I restored required a square fillet welded in each side.

I bought one new back in 1970, mine was blue but had the same fluted top cover and smooth sides that yours has.....can't be certain about the rake of the rear part though I DO remember sitting on
the air scoop a lot with the girlfriend on the back

I can only assume that some racer turned up with a home built creation and the aftermarket parts suppliers caught on and started producing them .

I agree with you Martin, a straight back looks the best .

Colin if you removed the scoop you could have "teabagged " your plums in the gap

Perhaps that's why they invented the T peice

i had one similar to that in the early 70's (unbranded make) but the slope back part was longer than the one you have (approx 100 mm).
it was almost as if someone had cut the final curved third of it off.
sadly no pics of it

Thanks Peejay - so it sounds like they were manufactured with a slope back albeit possibly a home / shed modification
