What is the current thinking on cylinder kits?

Postby Donnie » Tue Sep 10, 2019 2:19 pm

Right so I have an engine casing that needs ally welding to the crankcase mouth, its currently small block spacing but if Im going to use it then Ill happily have the work done to have it done to 200 spacing.

So, I do NOT want anything revvy and racy, I want some speed but touring & reliability are my most important factors and on that basis im ruling out cast iron kits, TS1s and Quattrinis.

As an add on, I don't want a long stroke crank and I don't care if its an expansion pipe or not as long is doesnt hang too low and carb wise would rather stick to PHBH 30. Already have an LI150 gearbox and happy to stick with 4/5 plate clutch.

So, as Im quite out of the loop these days Im after some discussion about what the general consensus is on a good quick (not racy) touring kit.

Touring, reliable, economical,PHBH30, not cast iron. RT 225 with reed conversion ticks all the boxes.

The BGM RT kit has a very similar port layout to the Mugello. I fitted an LTH reed valve conversion to my Mugello 225 and it totally transformed it but you're adding £200 + to your total and an out of the box BGM195 or 225 kit ticks nearly all the boxes for what most riders want.

Seems odd to spend all that extra money on a Reed valve when there are so many Reed valve kits available. Rb22, monza, ss225, gt200 etc.

Is there something special about rt225 with reed?

Yes :D it’s works very well, pulls like a Massey Ferguson from 2500 upwards while returning great fuel mpg.
Everybody has their own opinions on kits depending on weather you want too race or tour.
I run 25 delly on touring setup and if I wanna race then on goes the 30 delly ;) simples

Have you tried a quattrini ??? , they pull from nothing and you can go on a normal ride out hardly changing gear because of the torque or you can ride it like you stole it 6-8000 rev band .This kit is so versatile its untrue 40 mph for big steep hills just twist the throttle and its pulls you up when you see all around dropping down a cog .

For touring with plenty of low down grunt I’m using a CST3 on mine, was running an NK road but prefer the Chiselspeed pipe.

Donnie,
I’m using Bgm v3 on mine and happy with it. A fellow club member has the same kit but used the Bgm V4 and it ended up strangling the engine  weird so he reverted back too a dev-tour which transformed it.
