The SIP electronic speedo looks great and incorporates many useful features But I feel the manufacturer of this instrument is missing a huge oportunity by not addressing the British/Imperial system of speed measurement.
For those of us that think and drive using MPH as the working unit this device just isn’t a good alternative to the original speedometers that were calibrated in MPH and ododmeters registering miles.
When the needle meter is used as an analogue MPH speedo ,the full scale deflection of 140 MPH is a nonsense for a standard road going Lambretta. Relative to a standard or mildly tuned road going Lambretta working in MPH, using the needle display as an analogue MPH speedo results in a 50percent redundancy of the full scale needle deflection. The speed dial marking is more meaningful if you switch to KPH, although switching the needle function to show either MPH or RPM is still a waste of nearly half of the dial face at the sacrifice of better resolution .
I’m sure there would be market for an instrument that not only mimicked the original physically but perhaps with LCD technology the display could be switchable to display relevant MPH, KPH ,RPM tailored to suit the scooter it was fitted to.
The heart of this unit seems to be common technology that is sold in other guises ,to wit, very cheap bicycle speedometers which are adaptable to different size wheels, temp, distance and indeed all the functions the SIP device incorporates.
So what about it ?,if SIP don’t see the shortcomings of their offering and redesign perhaps some entrapeneur might.
