Amal Mark 2

Postby St George » Wed Mar 28, 2018 3:05 pm

I am now considering trying a Mark 2 Amal on my 200 which has a jap con rod, 3 mm packer etc with a Scootopia Ancilloti style exhaust. Has anyone got any experience of these carbs please. Will a standard throttle and choke cable work with these. Thanks.

Thanks Martyn. Jetting seems more complex than Delly's from what I have read.

The choices are more limited as there's only one needle choice.

You need to check whether the carb you get has a power jet or not but that's true of other choices too. Second hand or old 80s ones will often have the power jet blocked off.

Most used Mk2 amals have seen considerable use. These carbs do wear quite badly on our vibration ridden scooters, making them impossible to set up when normally they should be the easiest carb in the world to set up.Then they end up on fleabay or parts stalls. Something to be aware of.

A Made in Spain one then presumably?
They usually need a No4 slide from memory and a nice heavy slide usually made from chromed brass as the original zinc ally ones were very dangerous on open carbs. When it rained, the fuel would emulsify around the slide jamming it open. Had a few scary moments as a youth with this one. :o
I remember that we used to get these slides made specially back in the 70's. cos Amal didn't offer a solution to the problem at the time.
Has this changed I wonder?

I had a 32mm Amal fitted to a Wildcat manifold in the late 60's. Have to say it was the easiest carb I'd ever had to set up. Think mine was specified for a TriumpH Bonneville.
