VHSH 30mm

Postby B1gD0gu3 » Wed Mar 05, 2025 12:26 pm

Hi all,
Have recently fitted a VHSH 30mm to my TS1 225. Anyone with any experience of this carb advise on the carbs current set up:

U16 needle
155 Main jet
DQ 268 Atomiser
60 Pilot
50 Slide
300 Needle Vv
Franspeed Supertourer exhaust.
Running without side panel fitted but will be fitting once a hole is made in it.

I have changed the Main jet from 165 as it was very boggy, and replaced the DP 266 Atomiser for the DQ one. I haven't had chance to try out the changes made yet, just after people with far more knowledge of carb set ups than I have to give their opinions/advice.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice received.

FYI - Most people that I know to be running actually use the K needle range in their VHSH carbs. I did similar with my VHSA carb, which is also intended for U-needle use, and I've ridden a fair few TS1s set up with K-needles and they've all been excellent. Whilst the U needles are shorter than the Ks, with some dealers/tuners suggesting that you should cut Ks to U length, this has never actually added any benefit and everyone that I know is still running full length needles in their VHSH. Not in a TS1 but I have had one of the UK's most respected dyno operators dyno my VHSH with full length Ks.

Are you particularly set on using U needles (fewer options than the extended K range)?

PS - Having spent a lot of time using VHSH, VHSA and VHSB carbs, I have noted VERY different set-up suggestions from others, with main jets differing wildly (i.e. 135-175). Indeed, whilst AF's recommendations are often around the 165 mark, I know of plenty of people leaving dynos with mains around 140-145. Perhaps this is a reflection of your richness with your current main, and you might want to look at other needle and atomiser options. BTW - I would consider the price of a decent dyno session vs the rapidly mounting cost of buying VHSH components to try.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Thanks for the reply, appreciated.
I'm using the U16 needle as it was supplied in the carb. I am quite happy to change to a K needle, do you have any suggestions in which to try?
I totally agree about dynoing but I would have to van or trailer the scoot down South as there are no specialists up here in Scotland afaik with the facilities.

Have been in touch with them today, seems very knowledgeable and a genuine person. Am taking the scoot over to get it set up on the dyno. Will post results once i've got it sorted.
Thanks for the replies, appreciated & thank you Toddy for finding the place, 40minutes away & I didn't know it existed!

Well it didn't go too well, made 15hp on the dyno, jetting was sorted but issues abound. Engine was opened up and multiple faults found wrt engine build. Had no go whatsoever. So a rebuild is in order to put right some of the problems found. Was more annoyed that my season is over before it has begun. If anyone is interested I will update once everything is rectified. Thanks for all the help, it's appreciated.

Bugger! Then again, you could have been chasing your tail, thinking that the issues were carb related, wasting time and money by looking in the other direction. In that respect, finding the issues means that the dyno session was quite a success.

All the best. I look forward to reading that all gets resolved and that you're happy with the end result.
