Ldi or should that be Lid ?

Postby carlos fandango » Tue Oct 21, 2014 9:49 pm

Well time for a winter project :)

I brought a basket case LD 57 80% complete about 4 years ago with the intention of putting a Cagiva mito / RS125 engine in it. unfortunately the very next day i came off on the way to work on some diesel and tore a ligament off my thumb :( which meant three month off work and the project got shelved.

In the last four years i decided the bike engined conversion was probably beyond my skill level :) and thought id settle on a "normal" S1,2,3, engine.
I got the tube off a friend who was restoring an S2 and need a new loop .

So out with the grinder

Well.............the lince is just about done .........just needs registering :)

My old series one , that started out as a simple reframe , turned into a bit more :( .....and thats virtually done , but again needs registering :)

This one ....I only started as I had a job posponed and was at a bit of a loose end , so thought id spend a Friday afternoon with my friend Mr angle grinder :D

The two pics are from nearly two weeks ago , and ive moved on quite a bit :D
I dont know how far ill get with it this year as ive hit a bit of a snag :( more about that later.

So this was the first fit ,and just trying to decide where to cut. This is/was a mk3 57 model and has a tool box in the back, and i decided i wanted to try and keep it if possible . It would of been a lot easier to cut it out ! but, hey, who want easy :D
Image
so out with the grinder again.
Image
and its getting nearer .
Image
I had to make up a shroud to go around the shocker and seal the tool bxo up, as you can see , i initially cut a little to much out to start with  but that can be welded back in :)
Image
The shocker top mount is a problem area , as really the loop needs to go lower , but would mean cutting the loop around the shocker , but thats no good, so a few hours of trial and error, and head scratching to decide on the best position .

Getting the loop into a good position and with the clearance for the top shock mount is the first problem.

The next consideration is the legshields, in relationship to the loop. Most conversions ive seen use a fabricated bridge piece, i wanted to try and do it as the ld was done, without . The loop needed cutting

and leg shields needs altering and extended a little.

Interestingly , well at least to me :) the holes in the ld leggies line up with the (in my case ) S2 floor struts :D

Most people ive talked too have used an Ld tube forward of the bridge area, i couldnt understand why ? plus its easier (for me) to use a "normal" tube..... Perhaps its because the angles are slightly different ? a few cuts seemed to make them fit.

Image

Once i got the leggies positioned i could level the loop up and tack it on :)

WARNING !!! dont look at my welding ! ...as you may have noticed from the surroundings in the pics , wood is my material :D not metal ....ill get a professional to weld it up properly :)

Heres a further update

Now trying to sort the front end out and more trial and error :)
And im quite pleased how its sitting and looking

Image

Not to sure if im going to use the headset/cover ??
Image

Ive been fighting to get the loop and other thing to line up with the tube from the start, id get one part straight and another area was off. The more i looked at it, and eyed it up, i had a suspicion that the tube was bent :?
So a trip up to Gran Sport and on their jig, and the conclusion was that the tube was quite severely bent, from infront of the stand strut :( looks like it had had a smack from the l/h side, pushing the tube to the right and the steering column to the left  Not an easy repair, but can be done .
Im now just waiting to get it back, before i can do anymore.

Well its been a while , i got the frame back about three weeks ago, but then my panel beater/fabricator went AWOL :? and i haven't been able to get hold of him :( So there was no option, but to get the MIG out and have ago myself :) .....well whats the worse that can happen ?....... and ive got a grinder to "adjust" any mistakes !

WARNING ! if your a Welder, and of a "nervous disposition" you may want to look away now !

So the first job was to weld up the cut out for the shocker.
Image

Next was a back light, i had an LED light so just needed a housing for it.
Image
Cut out.
Image
And welded it
Image
Ive shaped it a little , but not finished yet
Image
Next up was a cut out for the kickstart, cut out and rolled under.
