Quick condenser question

Postby Tequipment » Wed Feb 03, 2021 2:54 pm

Probably a stupid newbie question, but how specific do you need to be when buying a new condenser?

I've got a 4 pole 6v non-battery Li125 with a Filso condenser and I'm struggling to find a direct replacement that looks identical to the one on there.
How important is it to find a Filso one, or will another one do the job? I'm sure I've read somewhere to keep matching parts.

I don't think that it is a "stupid question" but you will need a condenser that has the same physical size & rating as the OEM Filso to locate in the existing place for it. (It's worth replacing the cheese head slotted screws with SHCS's especially for the contact breaker as adjustment & ensuring tightness is so much easier)

If you wanted to go into the in's & out's of relocating the condenser, then this may help you understand that it's function is not dependent upon whereabouts it is sited

A quick google threw up Filso condensers on eBay etc but AF Rayspeed used to be very affordable last time I bought. You might like to check that you have an unsuppressed spark plug cap whilst you are @ it as Ray has excellent Champion caps & plugs which I admit my bias towards, having had far too many of the most popular brand fail. If you can, also ensure the HT lead is copper cored & not too aged.

I hope the above helps :)

Thanks for the really useful info.
Not having owned anything with an early type ignition before, this is all new to me and I'm enjoying learning it.

With most of the scooter built, I'm fast approaching the time where I can't get the thing to start. :D

As referred to previously, there is a way to test condensers, but replacement is probably the most common option.

You may be aware that if failure has occurred, there is still often a good spark @ kickover.

Leak down tests are worthwhile & you literally only need a cut up cycle inner tube that will stretch to fit inlet one end & exhaust the other. No need for a gauge! If it goes down, you don't need a gauge to tell you that
