TV 175 Will not start

Just rebuilt my engine to original spec including stator/battery/coil & voltage regulator.

Intial start up was fine and ran smooth but after leaving scooter overnight it ran lumpy than nothing?

Checked timing, checked carb, and there is a spark at the plug.

Does the the ignition need the battery charged to work?

Any help appreciated?

Hiya, you getting fuel through? checked the plug etc, if not blocked carb/ fuel tap problems. You don't need a charged battery to start the engine- it just powers the horn/brake light/parking light if its a 6v DC set up. Cheers Paul

I hate to say it, but have you done a leak down test since the starting issue?

The other things to check would be the condenser & plug cap, which should preferably be unsuppressed.

Yes leak down test was all good.
New condenser and plug cap unsuppressed.

No I meant is the spark plug wet with fuel/ flooded or dry from poor fuel flow or no fuel.

try starting with air hose off the carb.

If you’ve done the ‘finger test’ with the HT lead & your hair’s still on end, presumably you’ve got very good earths.

Have you got another flywheel to try with a good matching taper?

Hopefully, the lack of update from Littlewheels is indicative of him getting to IOW and having a blast since he arrived.

Firstly sorry for the delayed reply but didn't return from IOW until yesterday - on the train!

Looked for advice at the rally and after fully charging the battery the scooter started first kick however after 5 mins running it started to get lumpy then cut out.

Tried again but without lights and ran ok until I turned ignition key back to lights on?

Must be a stator plate issue or the voltage regulator so going to look at those tomorrow.

I suggested trying another flywheel but understand that was probably not possible. However, the magnetism might well be down on what it should be….

OK so replaced the voltage regulator & still the same - started, ran lumpy then turned ignition key to lights and she died

I have now removed the stator and will swap it with another I have on another engine however I can't help thinking that the replacement may be faulty too so does anyone know who could test & repair this one? I phoned Anthony at Scootronics & he no longer does repairs only product/part sales.

Have you checked and rechecked your wiring to the wiring diagram? I am no auto electrician but this sounds very much like something is wrong in your headset causing the ignition to short out when you activate the lights.

I have found those early ‘60s looms to be a bit of a head scratcher before now. The rear brake light switch blowing and cutting the ignition was a particular high point in my Lambretta education.

Yes it's a 6 pole Ducati.

Good point with respect to checking the wiring. I am sure I would have checked last time I worked on the headset but I will look anyway.
