That’s a good question.

Visually, the later S3 hubs are obviously aesthetically different to earlier versions in that they are ‘sharper’ to fit the Slimstyle range of Lambrettas. But apart from the visual clues of the wheel mounting lugs & perhaps the ‘finning’, there is a significant weight diference of something like 0.3 kg between late S3 & Serveta hubs.

I believe, but cannot verify absolutely, that some of the additional material is in the ‘flange’ of the hub, that is the area between the centre boss & the change in section that goes to support the brake lining. In other words, when fitted on the bike, the vertical section is thicker on Serveta than the late S3.

What this amounts to is a stronger hub, better able to cope with the extremes encountered, mostly during racing.

Personally, having had a S3 hub break @ Pembrey & witnessed several others fracture identically, I have only ever since used Serveta for that purpose.

The good news is that when the late S3 hubs do break, they shear in such a way that the broken outer ring (c/w tyre & rims) ‘fail safe.’ That is, the tyre etc can only go towards the crankcase, where it starts rubbing whilst drive diminishes & any prospect of a Lambretta handling rapidly evaporates. Dreadful though that experience is, it must be far better than the alternative of the wheel going the opposite direction in its bid for freedom.

However, on the road with an SX Rapido 235 ridden with reasonable zest, I’m happy to use a good original Italian late S3 hub.

I hope this explanation helps.

Cool. Thanks for all the information. After all your advice I decided to take my original serveta hub along with me when I took my engine to be vapor blasted to ask if they could do anything with it. Thankfully they told me no problem. It was all rusted and none of the extractor holes were any good. But fingers crossed they said they will helicoil the holes and vapor blast and clean it up.

Hi again.

As you say, you intend to get the original holes repaired, which I prefer, personally. There is the alternative of drilling & tapping fresh holes @, say, 60° to the originals.

As M7 & M6 are identical pitch, yet another way of tidying 'baggy' holes is to Helicoil the M7 (x 1.0 pitch) with an M6 Helicoil tap (Major Ø 7.422) & fit M6 inserts for use with M6 screws which are readily available in good grades (10.9 or higher) & likely far superior to some of the M7 cheese base screws sold to us.....

I’ve used the same trick on race bike fork links for years so that I can use an M6 Socket Cap Head Screw with a tubular type spacer for the bottom damper mounts. It means that the dampers are just that bit easier/quicker to swing out of the way when accessing the axle nuts whilst changing front tyres especially as the hydraulic hose must remain attached.

Thanks for the tip but that's just a tad to technical for me. The bloke who is doing it for me specializes in old school racing two strokes from the 60's and 70's. He did say he would helicoil them and looking he thought they were 7mm. I'm sure he will do a Stella job. ;)

I'm not sure if this is a Siambretta original or the Safe one from Tino.

I was under the impression that "safe hubs"were a copy of the series 2 hubs and that Spanish hubs were just like the series 2 hub.

"MB" Hubs are UNI Auto which are indian produced - which are sold in many other places at a fraction of the cost .........

I have had no issues with UNI hubs - I have them on two bikes, they replaced a genuine Innocenti and a FA.

There's something about a seeing a completed front wheel that i'm sure only lambretta owners know....

Whenever I start a new build the rims/tyres are always done first, then front hub, then assemble rim and hub this point is like the start line.......

Now I've got itchy fingers again.......restored vjay Super mk 2 on my mind at moment!!!
