SIP speedo and lighting intermittent

Postby Paul_from_Thornbury » Tue Feb 06, 2018 5:37 pm

SIP speedo and lighting issues. Both are fed direct from rectifier, SIP feed goes into an Anthony Tambs intelliconverter, which supplies constant DC to the SIP. When revving slightly above idle both lights, intelliconverter and speedo cut out.
At idle, the SIP cuts out on its own when horn pressed, lights and intelliconverter stay on. Doesn't do it above idle.

What's your favourite to replace, stator or rectifier?

Easy Tiger ;) I would check all connections from the stator into the rectifier ar sound and not corroded. I would also remove the earths and check that you have bright metal contact. If you have the flywheel off I would check the soldered joints on the lighting coils and also that the earth tag on the stator core is not loose. Worth checking all that before splashing out on new parts, from the symptoms it does sound like a loosed connection.

Has this scoot got a battery, or is just relying on what the generator/ rectifier puts out?
Without a battery, the generator's output around tickover will be very erratic leading to the issues you describe.

He says he has one of Anthony Tambs Inteli Converters which do away with tickover feed problems without the use of a battery

Couple of issues found.
I had a spare used rectifier, which I slaved in last night and the lights/intelliconverter and speedo cutting out at RPM's just above idle have been fixed.

However had a quick chat with Anthony Tambs, the horn issue at tick over will still be there even with an intelliconverter, to get rid of this he advises the need to go full DC or at least make the horn DC, and others have advised to make the brake light/horn DC by use of a rectifier/regulator combined with a battery.

Noticed this morning while riding that one of my headlight rim screws had come out and when pressure applied to headlight that speedo and lights are going out, so got a loose connection or earth path here that needs looking at.

Plan is to keep the intelliconverter for the SIP (and USB charging), and will put an MB regulator/rectifier and battery in longer term and convert horn and brake light to DC.

I can't really comment about that product Coaster as I can't seem to find any published technical details for it.

It would be SO much easier just to convert to full DC.

They are made by Anthony Tambs, the chap that makes the Gamatech speedos as well as external pickups, ac and dc cdi's and his own extended slot stators. You will find him on Face Book under Scootronics.

Like you say.... Convert to full DC. No questionable shit required. ;)
