1955 model d ( make it up as I go along! )

Postby Kirk St Moritz » Thu Jan 22, 2015 4:56 pm

Ok, so it would seem that there is some interest in this project! I'm on with it at the same time as numerous others so it won't be finished anytime soon.

It's a 1955 model D which I'm building from a bare frame and individually bought parts, in a make it up as I go along sort of fifties racer style!

Starts with a frame!

Ohhhh  Sense and I don't very often go hand in hand!

Anyway this'll probably be a bit boring! So here goes..... I've been to Vittorios Casa lambretta museum a good few times now, and I've been intrigued by the early racers you are introduced to as you come to the top of the stairs from the shop. Scooters like this! Also I've traveled through Italy a little and seen some nice original model A and B racers too!

So I thought I'd take a little inspiration from them and build something along the same lines. I don't know much about racing engines so I wanted simplicity and reliability.

Some of the racers which inspired me.....

Reading about Romolo Ferri and the development of the Siluro was very inspiring too! In fact there's a very interesting project in the footing, with the intention of setting a new speed record for a Lambretta.

Decided to get the engine sorted on this one first. So it was sent to a shaft drive engine expert Peter McNally at Scoot-Forever. Top service and attention to detail.

The engine was missing quite a few parts and also had a lug snapped on the main casing. A new casing was found and the whole engine stripped, painted and rebuilt with a lot of NOS parts, and uprated parts such as a Tino Satchi crank and variotronic ignition. Also an aftermarket sports exhaust fitted.

If I was starting my D project all over again I'd make it into a 'racer' . I'm looking forward to following this build as I fancy something similar but with a series 3 engine/frame to make it more everyday rideable. With the increased interest in Cafe Racers in the bike scene it would give me great pleasure to turn up on a 'Cafe' Lambretta and show up the hipsters!

Waddos got my model C in for a complete restoration at the moment Jazzy. Looking forward to the result.

So Ive been collecting some parts together to build this mutant d150. It's sporting a set of model c legshields here but they are going to be cut down and modified to fit. I threw them together for this pic.......

The frame and some of the parts are now in filler primer.

Been doing the prep myself but I need to get the rear bracket welded.
